22 & 23 March 2012 at PGIS, University of Peradeniya, SRI LANKA

The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for analytical and solution-based discussions and to disseminate knowledge and exchange information regarding research activities and plans for studying the relationship between water resources, and environmental and anthropogenic activities with special emphasis on water pollution and effects on human health. Participants will include academics, scientists, engineers, managers, legislators, NGO representatives and policy makers involved in water, environment and water related health issues.

Inland waters of Sri Lanka play a major role in our economy by providing water for irrigation, power generation, inland fisheries, and also for supplying drinking water to community. Therefore the assurance of the quality of water has become an important task. Unfortunately water bodies are now under stress due to various threats from natural and anthropogenic sources. Hence the main objective of the symposium is to understand the current conditions of surface and groundwater of Sri Lanka with special emphasis on Dry Zone reservoirs, and mitigation efforts to control water pollution. Presentation of research on water quality and human health, and pollution control attempts conducted in other countries is also warmly welcome. The symposium will thus be a platform for creating partnerships in solving water pollution problems, environmental degradation and health risks affecting different communities in different regions of Sri Lanka and abroad. The symposium will also facilitate the sharing of experience of well known scholars and young scientists through presentations of scientific and technical papers and posters on research, planning research and developmental activities.

Topics to be Covered

  • Benefits of Inland Water Resources.
